Neuköllner Oper: Musical Theater with Attitude
Since its founding as a chamber choir by Winfried Radeke in 1972, the Neuköllner Oper has evolved into a venue that consistently combines opera, theater, and musicals. Located on Karl-Marx-Straße since 1988, it is now an indispensable part of Berlin’s cultural life.
Under new artistic direction, the current season brings pop culture, glamour, noise, social criticism, musicals, and performances to the stage, featuring artists such as Björk, Kat Frankie, Philip Glass, and the collective Club Gewalt. The program is as diverse as the neighborhood itself. Pieces are not created in an ivory tower, but emerge directly from social discourse.
With “Crime of Passion”, for example, the house explores femicides in opera, their historical roots, and their presence in everyday life. Additionally, the chamber opera “Selemo” brings South African composers to the stage, intertwining Vivaldi’s Four Seasons with the ritual reed dance of the Swazis. So, anyone who thinks opera is dusty simply hasn’t visited the Neuköllner Oper yet.
Sunday in Neukölln: No Day for the Couch
The BAM! Festival for contemporary musical theater is taking place for the first time in the Neuköllner Oper’s premises, making Sunday a valuable excursion destination. Mobile subtitles in German and English are available for selected productions, allowing visitors without prior knowledge to follow along easily. Furthermore, the house regularly cooperates with other Berlin institutions, including the Komische Oper Berlin. During its renovation period, the Neuköllner Oper will be used as a venue for Komische Oper productions. Thus, a single Sunday in Neukölln sometimes brings more to the stage than some major theaters in an entire week.
