Anyone looking for Egyptian cuisine in Prenzlauer Berg will inevitably find Meya Meya. This small family restaurant on Greifswalder Straße serves North African home cooking that tastes as if you were a guest in Cairo.

Koshary, Tamya and Chicken Shawarma from the Spit

Meya Meya is one of the few African restaurants in Berlin specializing in Egyptian cuisine. Particularly popular are Koshary, a classic Egyptian national dish made from macaroni, rice, lentils, chickpeas, and fried onions with tomato sauce, as well as Tamya, the Egyptian variant of falafel. Unlike its Lebanese relative, it is made from fava beans and is deep green inside, golden brown and crispy outside with a sesame crust. Additionally, there is chicken shawarma from the spit with hummus, salad, and sauces of your choice, Egyptian kofta made from grandmother’s recipe, and chicken liver served as a plate or in bread. Those who don’t eat meat will also find a good selection: vegan seasonal vegetables, foul (fava beans in sauce), and various sauces and dips complete the offering.

A Family Business with History in Bötzowkiez

Meya Meya has been located on Greifswalder Straße for several years. It is run by an Egyptian couple who warmly welcome guests and prepare the food themselves. The area between Greifswalder Straße and Volkspark Friedrichshain is already known as a culinarily diverse neighborhood. For example, nearby are Savanne Imbiss on Greifswalder Straße, which offers Sudanese specialties, and Restaurant Schoenbrunn in Volkpark Friedrichshain, right by the swan pond. Meya Meya is one of those addresses in this neighborhood that people know and visit again and again.
