Charlottenburg has many faces, but this one is the spiciest: Bier's Kudamm 195 has been serving currywurst with homemade sauce directly on Kurfürstendamm since 1965, where strollers pass by during the day and night owls stop in at night, preferably with a glass of champagne in hand.

On Ku’damm since 1965: a true Berlin institution

The well-known Berlin photojournalist Klaus-Peter Bier opened the stand back in 1965. Since then, it has been an integral part of West Berlin’s snack bar culture. The currywurst here is not served in a simple paper tray, but on high-quality porcelain. It also comes with a proper metal fork, replacing the usual wooden or plastic cutlery, which we found particularly surprising during our visit. Such details make all the difference. The stand is set back slightly from the roadside of Kurfürstendamm, sandwiched between celebrity hairdresser Shan Rahimkhan and the glass facade of the Berlin Audi dealership. If you want to explore more after your visit: The Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, Savignyplatz, and the Zoological Garden are located along Kurfürstendamm. The shop is open until 5 AM from Monday to Thursday, and even until 5:30 AM on Fridays and Saturdays. That’s hard to beat.

What to order at Bier’s Kudamm 195

The heart of it all is, of course, the Berlin currywurst. The legendary currywurst is prepared with a homemade spicy sauce and served fresh from the grill. The classic at Bier’s is the currywurst with casing, optionally with fries or in a bun, with a velvety-smooth tomato sauce that we found particularly well-rounded and balanced compared to other stands. Also available are fries red/white, meaning classically with ketchup and mayo, which was absolutely perfect for us. In addition to currywurst, there’s also Thuringian sausage, boulette (meatball), meat skewer, and french fries. A personal insider tip is the curry meatball with steamed onions. Furthermore, it’s worth taking a look at the drink menu. The family business on Ku’damm also serves the legendary homemade spicy sauce with the sausage, while Wilmersdorf night owls like Heiner Lauterbach or Rolf Eden prefer to sip noble Dom Pérignon with it. So, if you like, just order champagne with it. This is Berlin currywurst at its most glamorous.
