One of Berlin's most famous currywurst stands has been located on Mehringdamm in Kreuzberg since 1981. Curry 36 is not a hype, but lived capital city culture: loud, honest, heartily good.

Kreuzberg Legend on Mehringdamm

The story of Curry 36 begins with a wooden cart in a house entrance. Back then, the snack bar was called „Wurstmaxe” and simply stood in the entrance of the building at Mehringdamm 36. In 1981, the Berlin couple Vera and Lutz Stenschke took over the stand, writing a piece of Berlin history. Today, there are four locations in the city, but the original location in Kreuzberg remains by far the most popular. Several thousand currywurst are sold here daily. Even Hollywood star Tom Hanks is said to have wished he lived within walking distance of the stand. By the way, those who visit the original location also have the Jewish Museum and Checkpoint Charlie nearby. The stand is open daily until 5 AM, so it’s still accessible even when Berlin hasn’t gone to sleep yet.

What’s on the Menu: Currywurst in Berlin Across the Board

The choice here is not easy, as the offering is larger than one might think. Basically, there’s currywurst with or without casing: With casing, it’s crispier; without casing, it’s a bit softer, just as Berliners have known the original sausage since the 1950s. Both variants come with the in-house Curry 36 ketchup, made with 87 percent tomato paste, as well as its own curry powder blend. If you like it spicier, just say so when ordering. Those who value regionality can choose the currywurst made from Havelland apple pork from the Havelland organic manufactory. There’s also a poultry currywurst made from 100 percent chicken. For those who don’t eat meat, the vegan currywurst made from wheat and soy protein is a solid option, prepared separately from animal products. In addition, there are “Pommes Schranke,” meaning classic red/white fries with ketchup and a mayonnaise specially developed for Curry 36. Vegan mayo is also available. If you want more side dishes, you’ll find potato salad, pasta salad, and coleslaw on the menu.
