In Berlin's Wedding district, Flying Roasters roast organic coffee sourced directly from fair cooperatives worldwide. No middlemen, no greenwashing: here, artisanal quality stands equally alongside genuine social responsibility.
Flying Roasters: Direct Trade by Conviction
In Berlin’s Wedding district, Flying Roasters roast their coffee. They offer premium coffees from direct trade, sourcing their green coffee directly from the producing cooperatives on-site, without intermediaries. This is more than just a marketing strategy. Flying Roasters pay a stable price of at least 2.75 US dollars per pound, while Fairtrade is currently at 1.40 dollars. The green beans come from cooperatives in Guatemala, Honduras, Peru, Sumatra, Ecuador, and Ethiopia. Furthermore, Flying Roasters are organized as a collective themselves: decisions are made jointly, responsibilities are shared, without hierarchies and with equal pay for everyone.
Flying Roasters are part of the roasting cooperative Roasters United, which now includes 18 roasteries across Europe, with the goal of jointly purchasing green coffee directly from the producing cooperatives. Since 2021, they have been a cooperative where each roastery has one vote. This ensures even a small Berlin coffee roastery access to exceptional qualities.
Artisanal Roasting and More Than Just Coffee
All Flying Roasters coffees are organic-certified, and gentle, artisanal roasting methods bring out the full range of aromas. The organically grown beans are roasted using a classic drum roasting process. This is more careful and gentle than industrial processes and also ensures a better aroma. A weekly quality control of all roasts takes place together with a trained Q-Grader.
If you want to learn more about specialty coffee, this is also the right place. Flying Roasters offer workshops: a Barista workshop, a Roasting workshop, a Filter Coffee Preparation workshop, and a Roastery Tour including tasting. In addition to a variety of espresso, cappuccino, and pour-over coffee, the café also offers sodas, teas, matcha, croissants, and cakes. Both locations, at Hochstraße 34 in Wedding and Gneisenaustraße 85, are open daily.
