Fred Koller, long known in Berlin for his Austrian cuisine, has been running Gasthaus Alt Wien with his partner Sibylle Hassfurther since September 2010. The fact that this Austrian restaurant has remained consistently well-visited to this day is no coincidence. The guesthouse in the Bötzowviertel in Prenzlauer Berg focuses on classic imperial-royal cuisine, complemented by Austrian lemonades, wines, and beers in a cozy atmosphere. This sounds simple but is rarely executed with such consistency.

Classics of Alpine cuisine are served, such as Tafelspitz with roasted potatoes and creamed savoy cabbage, as well as roast pork with sauerkraut and bread dumplings. And of course, the original Wiener Schnitzel, which cannot be missing from any menu. The portions are not secondary: despite the good location in the expensive district, prices are moderate, and the delicious veal schnitzel is the size of a plate.

Reservations are recommended as the popular establishment can get crowded quickly in the evenings. It is open Tuesday to Saturday from 6 PM, and Sundays from 12 PM; the kitchen remains closed on Mondays.
