The modern building of the Berlin animal shelter has often served as a film and photo set.
The animal shelter in Berlin-Falkenberg, with an area of 16 hectares, is one of the largest animal shelters in Europe. The Berlin architect Dietrich Bangert designed the foundation for the concrete building with many water features. The animal shelter currently consists of several cat and dog houses, a house for small animals and water birds. Additionally, there is a dog playground, an animal clinic, and an animal cemetery.
Due to its clear architecture and the size of the grounds, the animal shelter is often used as a film set. The 2005 film Aeon Flux, starring Charlize Theron, was partly shot at the Berlin animal shelter. The story is set 400 years in the future and is based on an MTV animated series. Most of the scenes around the film’s government complex were created at the Falkenberg animal shelter. The futuristic building was also used as a backdrop for parts of the Tatort episode “Leiden wie ein Tier” (Suffering like an Animal).
