I like watching the Tatort not on my own, but where people guess along and root together. For this list I searched out Berlin pubs and cafés that turn the Sunday-night crime drama into an experience. What mattered to me was a good view, a cozy atmosphere and that special appeal of following the case together with others.
Opposite the Volksbühne, Volksbar operates a screen of approximately 24 square meters, the largest a Berlin pub offers for the Sunday crime show. Around fifty guests can fit in front of it, and there are cocktails, draft beer, and a foosball table in the basement. If you want to watch Tatort here, you should arrive half an hour before the film.
Kvartira 62 in Wrangelkiez is furnished like a 1920s private apartment as a Russian bar: heavy curtains, old dressers, candles, and well-worn sofas. The menu offers pelmeni, a large selection of vodka and craft beer, an evening costs about fifteen euros. As a 'Tatort' pub, it feels more like a living room than a public viewing event.
The Celtic Cottage in Steglitz opened in 1979 and is one of Germany's oldest Irish pubs: nine draft beers, around seventy whisky varieties, steel darts, and a heated terrace with over sixty seats. The pub shows the 'Tatort' crime show on a big screen in the back room. Whoever guesses the culprit and submits their tip in time gets half a draft beer on the house.
The FC Magnet Bar on Veteranenstraße was founded in 2000 as the clubhouse of FC Magnet Mitte and remains a pub with pennants on the wall and a foosball table in the basement. Five televisions and a projector screen are spread across the rooms; outside, tables are set near Weinbergspark. For Sunday crime dramas in Mitte, this means: come early, no reservations are taken.
Hops & Barley has been brewing in Wühlischstraße since 2008, in the premises of the former Schultz butcher shop, whose tiles have remained. Four of their own varieties are constantly on tap, plus changing specialty beers, all unfiltered; a small Pilsner costs 3.80 Euros. For Tatort evenings in Friedrichshain, three screens hang in the guest room, and no reservations are taken.
Hase in the Boxhagener Kiez is a Friedrichshain neighborhood pub with vinyl records as bar stool seats, lamps made from Jack Daniel's bottles, and a foosball table between the sofas. Musically, it's all about Ska, Psychobilly, and Rockabilly, and smoking is allowed. The pub itself includes 'Tatort' in its program, alongside pub quizzes and football.
The Junction Café on Gneisenaustraße is one of the few Berlin 'Tatort' pubs that firmly schedules the Sunday crime series in its own calendar, alongside Bundesliga and Champions League. Broadcasts are shown on a big screen in the long dining area, accompanied by burgers, wraps, and nachos. Reservations for broadcasts are only taken by phone and at least one day in advance.
The Baergarten is located in Niederschöneweide on the grounds of the Bärenquell brewery, where the last brew ran in 1994, followed by almost twenty-five years of standstill. Today, it offers Neapolitan pizza from the stone oven starting from 10.00 Euros, a small stage, and a beer garden. The venue shows 'Tatort' on a screen indoors with free admission.
Bad Kreuzberg is not a spa, but a cocktail bar in Berlin-Kreuzberg that permanently shows Tatort every Sunday at 20:15 via projector.
BARt Bar Berlin no longer offers Tatort Public Viewing and can now only be booked as an event location.
