Hops & Barley has been brewing in Wühlischstraße since 2008, in the premises of the former Schultz butcher shop, whose tiles have remained. Four of their own varieties are constantly on tap, plus changing specialty beers, all unfiltered; a small Pilsner costs 3.80 Euros. For Tatort evenings in Friedrichshain, three screens hang in the guest room, and no reservations are taken.
Hops & Barley: Brewery in the old Butcher Shop
Hops & Barley is located on Wühlischstraße, not far from Boxhagener Platz; the tram practically stops right outside the door. From 1955, the space was Schultz’s butcher shop and closed in 1995. The old tiles have remained, and in the smoking room, there are photos from that time, provided by the grandson of the butcher shop’s founder. Renovation began in 2007, brewing has been taking place here since 2008, and in 2009, a larger system with a five-hectoliter brew size was added.
Four of their own varieties are on tap: Pilsner, Amber, Dark, and Wheat, plus changing specialty beers. Nothing is filtered; the homemade cider matures in the barrel and is served naturally cloudy. A small Pilsner costs 3.80 Euros, a coffee 2.20 Euros.
Three Screens and around Eighty Own Beers
Over the years, around eighty different beers have been created in Wühlischstraße, from Bockbier to Stout, with specialty beers always dry-hopped. For those who want to know more, there are brewing courses, which, however, do not take place here but at the second brewery location in Marzahn.
Three screens hang in the guest room, showing major broadcasts, from the Bundesliga to Sunday crime dramas. Food includes Flammkuchen (tarte flambée) and a Mexican peanut mix; nothing more is needed alongside the beer. The establishment generally does not accept reservations, so you just come by and see if there’s anything available.
