The Sauer Organ and the International Organ Summer

Every Friday at 8 PM, the famous Sauer Organ resounds under the hands and feet of top-class organists. This makes the organ the heart of Berlin Cathedral as a concert venue. The International Organ Summer celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2025 – Cathedral Organist Andreas Sieling initiated the series in 2005 and has successfully developed it ever since. It is played on the historical Sauer Organ from 1905 with its 7,269 pipes across 113 registers. The program is worth listening to: On August 1st, Gabriele Agrimonti from Rome dedicates herself to the theme of “Organ and Opera” with works by Wagner, Fauré, and Verdi. Thus, the repertoire effortlessly ranges from Bach to the late Romantic sound ecstasy.

Berlin Cathedral: Choral Music, Classical Concerts and More

The cathedral’s outstanding acoustics are particularly well suited for organ concerts, choral performances, and classical music. The Berlin Cathedral Choir significantly contributes to this. The Cathedral Choir, under the direction of Cathedral Cantor Adrian Büttemeier, presents the second major highlight of the music summer – its chamber choir will dedicate itself to the works of female composers from Germany, Great Britain, Lithuania, Sweden, and the USA. Particularly pleasing: All concerts by the Berlin Cathedral Choir are free to attend. Those looking for a classical music event at the end of the year will also find something. On December 31, 2025, at 7:30 PM, the New Year’s Eve concert “Fireworks for Organ and Trumpet” will take place in Berlin Cathedral. In short: Berlin Cathedral is not a concert hall in the classical sense – but a place where classical concerts unfold a unique gravitational pull of their own.
