Stage Bluemax Theater

Tiergarten

The Stage Bluemax Theater on Marlene-Dietrich-Platz was originally an IMAX cinema designed by Renzo Piano and was converted in 2007 for the Blue Man Group, which had its own venue here until 2025. Today the compact auditorium with around 600 seats works as a guest performance venue for musicals, currently Fack Ju Göhte.

A Round Domed Building by Renzo Piano at Potsdamer Platz

The Stage Bluemax Theater is located on Marlene-Dietrich-Platz in Tiergarten, opposite the Theater am Potsdamer Platz and in front of the Atrium Tower, as part of the district designed by Renzo Piano at Potsdamer Platz. Potsdamer Platz station, with S-Bahn, U2, and regional transport, is about 400 meters away, and Mendelssohn-Bartholdy-Park subway station is a similar distance; the bus stops Kulturforum, Philharmonie Süd, and Potsdamer Brücke are between 200 and 400 meters away and are served by lines M41, M48, M85, 200, and 300. The venue does not have its own parking spaces, but there are several paid parking garages in the district. The building was constructed in 1998, not as a theater, but as an IMAX cinema: a semicircular building with a dome whose inner surface served as a projection screen, enlarging the screen from 550 to 950 square meters. It was only in 2007 that it was converted into a show theater. This makes it one of the few Berlin stages that were never planned as theaters and owe their round basic shape to a completely different use: the auditorium still sits within the shell of a cinema whose dome once held the city’s largest screen.

From the Home of the Blue Man Group to a Guest Performance Venue for Musicals

The Stage Bluemax Theater was converted for the Blue Man Group, which had initially performed in the larger neighboring building since 2004 and moved across the square to the smaller cinema, specially adapted for them, in 2007. The stage and auditorium were built around the principle of audience participation, even including dedicated poncho seats directly in front of the stage. The group remained here until August 31, 2025; over six million people saw the show in Berlin before they left the city in favor of new formats and venues. Since then, the venue operates as a guest performance house. The auditorium holds around 600 guests and is compactly designed for a Berlin musical theater, so even the back rows are relatively close to the action. The current schedule features the musical version of Fack Ju Göhte with music by Simon Triebel and Nico Rebscher, awarded as Best Musical at the German Musical Theater Prize; the story of ex-convict Zeki Müller, who ends up as a substitute teacher in a chaotic class, lasts about two and a half hours. This will be followed by Der kleine Lord (Little Lord Fauntleroy), Die Schöne und das Biest (Beauty and the Beast), Drei Haselnüsse für Aschenbrödel (Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella), and Rapunzel. Tickets start at 23.49 Euros.
