Gethsemanekirche

The Evangelical Gethsemane Church in Prenzlauer Berg stands for the peaceful revolution in the GDR.
As a meeting point for dissidents and members of the GDR peace movement, demonstrations were planned here. However, intercessory services, peace prayers, discussions, and concerts also took place.
Since October 2, 1989, the church was open around the clock, and vigils were held under the motto “Watch and Pray.” The thousands of visitors in a sea of burning candles in front of the church are still considered a symbol of peaceful protest today.
After the fall of the Wall, a replica of Ernst Barlach’s sculpture “The Fighter of the Spirit” on the south side of the church commemorates the events.
