BergWerk.Berlin: A former cinema as a climbing paradise

Where blockbusters once played, families now climb through a replica mine shaft. Five halls of the former CineStar cinema in the Helle Mitte shopping center in Hellersdorf have been converted into an indoor high ropes course, considered Europe’s largest indoor climbing park. Fourteen courses are spread across various difficulty, age, and size levels; the main park alone features 74 climbing elements. Climbing takes place between three and twenty meters high, with the climbing route reaching up to 25 meters. The highlight is called Alpinista and ends with a 40-meter-long zip line; those who dare can also experience a 12-meter free fall. The path leads from daylight into the darkened shaft, and the children’s courses are brightly lit. It’s a two-minute walk from Hellersdorf underground station.

From what age, and how a visit proceeds

For the children’s course, a minimum height of 1.10 meters applies; for the main park, 1.30 meters. Children aged 12 and above may climb independently. The youngest can enter the mini-course from 3 years old. No prior athletic experience is needed: before starting, there is a mandatory safety briefing of approximately 30 minutes, followed by two hours of climbing time. Helmets, harnesses, and automatic belay systems are provided; personal equipment is not allowed, and closed shoes and climbing gloves are mandatory. One adult supervises a maximum of five children. Packages cost between 14 and 29 Euros; non-climbing accompanying persons pay 5 or 10 Euros and watch from the visitor terrace or the Lange Schicht coffee bar.
