At the Landwehrkanal in Kreuzberg, the Rutz Zollhaus proves that upscale Berlin cuisine doesn't need a white tablecloth. The historic half-timbered house combines Michelin-star expertise with down-to-earth hospitality and a wine selection that is unparalleled in Berlin.

Berlin Cuisine with a Claim: Rutz Zollhaus in Kreuzberg

Behind the stove is a team shaped by Marco Müller, the three-star chef of Rutz Restaurant in Mitte. Florian Mennicken, who previously worked at Lorenz Adlon Esszimmer and Facil, now leads the kitchen by the canal. Together, they bring Berlin classics to Kreuzberg: Tartar, pike-perch, and Königsberger Klopse, consistently interpreted in the Berlin style. The surprise menu starts at 35 Euros for five small dishes, with the larger version for 75 Euros. The region is central, with a contemporary focus on plenty of vegetables and herbs.

Canal View, Tiled Stove, and an Exceptional Wine Selection

The Rutz Zollhaus is located directly on the picturesque Landwehrkanal in the heart of Kreuzberg. In summer, dining is outdoors; in winter, the wood-paneled dining rooms welcome guests with rustic tiled stoves. Bright rooms, modern lighting, open wine cabinets, and dry-aging refrigerators meet light plaster, gray sandstone, and dark stained wood. Those opening the wine list should bring time: The selection ranges from a solid Sauvignon Blanc for 30 Euros to Château Latour 2001 for almost 1,000 Euros, with a special emphasis on excellent Bordeaux wines. The Michelin Guide has again included the restaurant in its ranks for 2025, confirming what guests by the canal have long known: Upscale gastronomy in Berlin doesn’t have to be overwhelming or pretentious. The Rutz Zollhaus masters this balancing act with ease.
