Freischwimmer

Located by the Flutgraben in Kreuzberg, just before Schlesisches Tor, Freischwimmer is so close to the water that you can hear the ducks quack. Wooden furniture, old lamps, and an extensive outdoor area directly on the canal make this excursion restaurant one of the most atmospheric waterfront spots in Berlin.
A Piece of Old Berlin at the Flutgraben
Those visiting Freischwimmer for the first time will have to find it first. Some local knowledge is required: Through a lattice gate right next to a petrol station, you’ll reach the restaurant after about 100 meters. The effort is worth it. Freischwimmer represents old Berlin, which burst at the seams with creativity after the fall of the Wall. The restaurant is located in a former boat rental and has been offering delicious food in a casual atmosphere for over twenty years.
Enclosed by the Landwehr Canal, Spree, and Flutgraben, the area on Lohmühleninsel was long forgotten in the inner-German border region. Today, little of that is noticeable. Freischwimmer is larger than one initially thinks: The elongated interior seats 100 people, and another 150 outdoors. The ensemble stretches picturesquely along the Flutgraben, and from everywhere, you have a great view of the water. There’s also a boat rental on-site, so visitors can delightfully extend their time on the water after eating.
What’s on the Menu?
Freischwimmer’s menu is down-to-earth with an international touch. Whether it’s ceviche, celery in pastry, or the classic Wiener Schnitzel: you’ll find international culinary happiness here. The offering is complemented by tarte flambée and BBQ specialties. A real perennial favorite is the “Brotzeitteller” (snack platter): it’s one of the house’s bestsellers and comes with marinated olives, olive tapenade, paprika-rosemary cream, Camembert cream cheese, sausage, cheese, and egg. Those who prefer something warm can opt for pasta with sun-ripened tomatoes, juicy spring onions, fresh basil, and roasted seeds, or the roasted pork with aromatic port wine jus, fragrant apple-cinnamon red cabbage, and crispy bread dumplings.
Brunch by the Canal
On Saturdays and Sundays, brunch is also available from 10 AM to 2 PM. This is an especially great experience in good weather, as you sit directly by the water outdoors. Freischwimmer is a good address not only in summer. In winter, you can make yourself comfortable indoors, for example with goose and a view. If you come in the evening, you should reserve in advance. For four people or more, a reservation in the evening is highly recommended anyway.
