Hasir: Where Berlin’s Döner History Began

It was Mehmet Aygün who, in the early 1970s, was the first to sell the remnants of the traditional meat skewer in a piece of flatbread instead of on a plate. The location: Adalbertstraße 12 in Kreuzberg, exactly where Hasir Ocakbası is located today. Brothers Mehmet and Saim Aygün initially started a döner restaurant there, which became the first Hasir Restaurant in 1984. Thus, Hasir stands not only for good food but also for a piece of Berlin’s urban history.

From its beginnings in Kreuzberg, the Aygüns have since built six locations across Berlin, including Kreuzberg, Mitte, Charlottenburg, Schöneberg, and Spandau. So, if you’re not a regular at the original house, you’ll find a Hasir nearby anywhere in the city.

The meat comes from their own production, and the bread is baked fresh daily. The menu features many regional dishes, including a lentil soup with lemon or a finely chopped tomato and cucumber salad with pomegranate vinaigrette as a starter.
