Beneath the elevated railway arches of Schönhauser Allee in Prenzlauer Berg, Konnopke's Imbiss' yellow kiosk has stood since 1930. Those seeking Currywurst in its most authentic form in Berlin will find it here.

Konnopke’s Imbiss: A Berlin Legend Since 1930

There are places in Berlin that need no introduction. Konnopke’s Imbiss is one such place. Since October 4, 1930, the snack bar has stood at the corner of Schönhauser Allee and Danziger Straße in Prenzlauer Berg. Max Konnopke came from Cottbus to Berlin to become a sausage vendor. What he didn’t know: he would make Berlin history. From 1960, it offered the first Currywurst in all of East Berlin. The sauce recipe was developed at home back then and is still a closely guarded family secret today. Konnopke’s Imbiss is now a family-run business, already in its fourth generation.

If you want to eat Currywurst in Berlin, you can hardly pass by here. The bright yellow metal kiosk under the U2 subway arches has long become a landmark itself. If you want to stroll further afterwards: the Kulturbrauerei on Schönhauser Allee is only a few minutes’ walk away and houses clubs, theaters, a cinema, and the Museum of GDR Everyday Culture. Kollwitzplatz, the vibrant heart of Prenzlauer Berg, is also quickly reachable on foot.

What Can You Order at Konnopke’s?

The Currywurst in Berlin served here is without casing, known as a “Nackte” (naked). It is sliced, drenched with a spicy ketchup based on a family recipe, and sprinkled with curry powder. The special feature: there are five levels of spiciness. Those who like it hotter will be well served here. For us, the balanced blend of the fruity sauce and the curry aroma was what set Konnopke’s apart from other Currywurst stands in Berlin. It comes with crispy French fries that are convincing in themselves. For those who don’t eat sausage, a vegan Currywurst has also been on the menu for several years. In addition, Bockwurst, Knackwurst, and Berliner Boulette are part of the offering. To finish, a cool Schultheiss Pils is recommended. Orders are placed at the window, and food is eaten at the high tables directly under the tracks or in the small covered seating area next to it.
