On Bismarckstraße in Charlottenburg, directly opposite the Schiller Theater, Julia and Andreas at Österelli serve modern Alpine cuisine without a country house style. Instead of deer antlers on the wall: marble tables, designer lamps, and a veal schnitzel that redefines expectations for Berlin's Austrian restaurant scene.

Österelli: Alpine Cuisine You Don’t Expect in Berlin

On the multi-lane Bismarckstraße in Charlottenburg, few would expect to find a top Austrian restaurant. Yet, directly opposite the Schiller Theater, Österelli proves that Alpine cuisine can offer much more than just Wiener Schnitzel. Instead of wood-paneled walls, you’ll find Verner Panton Flowerpot lamps, Hans Wegner chairs, and bright marble tables. The interior is clear and modern. The focus is on modern Alpine cuisine, free from the heaviness of the country house style.

You are welcomed by the owner couple Julia Gockeln and Andreas Hauke, originally from Linz, with a warm „Servus”. What’s possible is made possible, and all in such a friendly and familiar atmosphere that you would gladly linger for hours.

Schnitzel, Kaiserschmarrn, and Pine Liqueur to Finish

Among the most popular dishes are Backhendl with cranberry sauce, as well as Wiener Schnitzel (veal) and Cordon Bleu, accompanied by typical side dishes like potato salad and cucumber salad. The Kren Schnitzel traditionally comes from milk-fed veal, but with a refined combination of horseradish and a perfectly crispy breading. Also particularly noteworthy is the origin of the ingredients: Andreas’ father picks fresh wild garlic in Austria, and in addition to the herb, he sends homemade pine liqueur to Berlin.

Of course, you don’t leave an Austrian restaurant without a portion of Kaiserschmarrn. It’s also worth taking a look at the wine list, as the owner couple regularly tests new Austrian wines for the menu. If you want to be sure of a table, you should reserve in advance. The storefront already shows: Österelli is no longer an insider tip in the neighborhood; the restaurant is usually filled to the last table.
