Zen Wave Therapy
Zen Wave Therapy is a one-person studio in the Samariterkiez in Friedrichshain. Treatments are not performed on a massage table, but in clothing on traditional Japanese futon mats, using Shiatsu, acupressure according to Traditional Chinese Medicine, and deep tissue work. One hour starts at 68 Euros, 90 minutes at 93.50 Euros.
Shiatsu on the Futon instead of Massage on the Table
Voigtstraße is one of those quiet residential streets in Friedrichshain where you don’t expect to find anything. That’s exactly where Zen Wave Therapy is located, a small studio with private treatment rooms, its own changing room, and an area for the preliminary consultation. It is run by a French therapist who worked abroad for about ten years before settling in Berlin. The most important difference from a typical massage studio is immediately apparent: there is no massage table. Work is done on the floor on traditional Japanese futon mats, and you remain dressed. This lowers the barrier for anyone who would otherwise have to undress before a treatment, and it changes the technique. Shiatsu works with body weight, with pressure via thumbs, palms, and elbows, and with stretches for which there would simply be no space on a narrow table. The room is deliberately kept simple, there is no canned music playing, and the entrance is a few meters next to the front door, which further slows down the moment of arrival.
Acupressure Points, Sports Massage, and Consultation in the Same Room
The offerings go beyond Shiatsu. The menu includes deep tissue and sports massages, therapeutic treatments, acupressure according to Traditional Chinese Medicine, yoga therapy, and macrobiotic nutritional counseling, which can be combined in the same appointment. A 60-minute full-body treatment starts at 68 Euros, the comprehensive 90-minute version with acupressure points is 93.50 Euros. Those who only want to relieve tension in the head and neck can do so with a half-hour session. Here, the combination of slow pace and targeted pressure helps against stress: it’s less about kneading muscles than about finding the point where the body releases tension on its own. Since only one person is treated, appointments are limited and should be booked early. Getting there is also convenient, as Samariterstraße U-Bahn station is just a few minutes’ walk away. For Shiatsu, loose clothing and a fresh pair of socks are recommended; no further preparation is needed. If you are unsure whether Shiatsu is suitable for your specific complaints, it’s best to clarify this during the preliminary consultation, for which time is already scheduled.
