Das Schloss: Shopping Center surrounding the old Steglitz Town Hall

Das Schloss is located at Schloßstraße 34 in Steglitz and is an unusual building even from the outside. The historicizing facade made of yellow Saxon sandstone echoes the department store architecture of the late 19th century and wraps around the neo-Gothic Steglitz Town Hall from 1898 on its north and west sides. The building was designed by Berlin architect Manfred Pechtold, built between 2004 and 2006 for approximately 220 million Euros, and opened on March 16, 2006. The historic town hall courtyard was preserved and covered at eave height with a steel-glass roof, creating a year-round usable piazza on the ground floor. Convenient for arrival: From the first basement floor, there is direct access to the Rathaus Steglitz subway station, where the U9 and S1 lines stop, and a bus terminal with twelve lines is right outside the door. The parking garage, accessible via Grunewaldstraße, offers around 650 parking spaces, plus charging stations for electric cars and a car wash. Bicycle parking spaces are located on Grunewaldstraße.

The Panorama Sky and the around 80 Shops in Das Schloss

Inside, around 80 shops are spread over 35,000 square meters of retail space, including MediaMarkt, H&M, Anson’s, Thalia, TK Maxx, and a Rewe. Dining options include Peter Pane, Thai Nippon Sushi Bar, Café al teatro, or Mahal Express. However, the true hallmark of the building hangs above visitors’ heads: The Panorama Sky, a projection of approximately 62 million pixels generated by 78 projectors hidden in lamp housings since March 2016, runs across about 1,200 square meters of ceiling space. Visible are coral reefs, schools of fish, divers, and mermaids, whose movements were captured via motion capture from real divers, accompanied by sounds including whale songs. Das Schloss is also more than just a shopping center: it houses the Ingeborg-Drewitz-Library, the district cultural office, and the Medienzentrum Berlin with four radio stations. Wheelchairs and buggies are available for rent at the customer information desk on the ground floor, and there is a nursing room on the second basement floor.
