The right belt, the right bag, a hat with character: accessories turn a good outfit into a truly personal look. Berlin has a number of special addresses for these finer points. In the Kreuzberg Graefekiez, the hat shop Save the Cake advises by face shape, from flat cap to top hat. In the Hackesche Hoefe, JOST Berlin Lederwaren runs its flagship store with bags made from certified tanned leather, while TomShot in Prenzlauer Berg has been designing jewellery in small batches in its own studio since 2001. For me, the charm of an outfit lies in the detail. A special hat or a well-made bag can change everything, and that is exactly what I look out for. In these shops, I keep discovering pieces that make my look my own. I share my favorite accessory addresses with you here.
In the Graefekiez, hats for women, men and children hang on red walls and in colourful shelf cubes. The range runs from flat caps, fedoras, trilbies and pork pies to bowler hats and top hats, plus fascinators and hair accessories. Customers are advised by face shape, and the search continues until the headwear truly fits.
In the Hackesche Hoefe sits the flagship store of a German bag brand that has been run as a family business since 2002. The leather comes from LWG certified tanneries, and on more than ninety percent of the models the lining is made from recycled PET. There is also a vegan line made from post industrial material instead of leather.
In the Kollwitzkiez at the Goehrener Ei, a Berlin workshop has been designing fashion jewellery in small batches since 2001. Development and assembly happen in its own studio, while casting and electroplating are done by specialist firms in Idar Oberstein and Pforzheim. Broken chains are repaired in house, some of them straight away.
In a Kreuzberg factory floor from the Wilhelminian era, every bag is created from start to finish by the same bag maker, without piecework or a piece-rate wage. Nappa leather, nubuck, woven horsehair, and fish leather are processed. Almost every model can be customized in color, internal layout, and strap length. The manufacturer also accepts repairs years later.
In Mommsenstraße, a milliner has run a small hat manufactory with her own studio since 1998. Hats are crafted from straw, felt, velvet, and braids, with a range spanning from fascinators to pillbox hats and top hats. Diagonally opposite, the men's salon has been located since 2010. The establishment still works worldwide for stage, film, and television.
In a Neukölln studio, unique handmade items are created from old ties, used shirts, and recycled moving blankets. Each piece exists only once, nothing is reproduced. No new fabric is produced for the brand's clothing and accessories. Sales are made through their own shop and at events, not through an open retail store.
On Stargarder Straße, an owner has been running a boutique for women's fashion, shoes, and accessories since 2011. The brands come from the Netherlands, Great Britain, Spain, Portugal, and Germany; the shoes are made in Europe from genuine leather. Sustainability is an explicit selection criterion; fast fashion is not included in the range.
In the fashion district around Alte Schönhauser Straße and Neue Schönhauser Straße lies the only Mitte branch of a Berlin chain that has existed since 2009. In addition to women's fashion, the shop carries hair clips, caps, scarves, hats, bags, and wallets, as well as earrings and necklaces. Items bought online can be exchanged and returned free of charge here.
At the corner of Unter den Linden and Friedrichstrasse stands the largest of the brand's six Berlin shops, on the very spot where the first traffic light with the original Ampelmaennchen once stood. Alongside bags, umbrellas, hats and key rings, a permanent exhibition shows over thirty traffic lights from around the world.
In Hermsdorf, a master tailor has been running a boutique for women's fashion and accessories since 2013. Collections come from Scandinavia, Holland, Italy, and Germany, complemented by shoes, belts, scarves, bags, and costume jewelry. The in-house alteration service handles fit adjustments. Advice is tailored to type, fabric, color, and cut.
