The Frannz Club is located in the old taproom of the Schultheiss brewery in the Kulturbrauerei complex, where the legendary youth club Franz supplied the East Berlin music scene from 1970 onwards. Today, concerts and parties take place here on three floors, plus a beer garden in the inner courtyard. Among Berlin's indie clubs, Frannz has the longest history.

Frannz Club in Kulturbrauerei: Indie Club with Brewery History

The Frannz Club is located on Schönhauser Allee in the Kulturbrauerei area, less than five minutes from Eberswalder Straße subway station. The site was once the Schultheiss Brewery, and the building where the club is located was its taproom from the beginning. The buildings in their current form have stood since 1892 and were designed by Franz Schwechten, the architect of Anhalter Bahnhof and the Memorial Church. Berliners at the time called the tower on Schönhauser Allee the ‘Beer Church’. Beer was brewed here for the last time in 1967.

After that, the building’s second career began. In 1962, the restaurant building became a district cultural center, and in 1970, it became the youth club Franz, which made a name for itself as a niche of East Berlin’s music culture and a meeting point for the subversive youth scene, but had to close in 1997 due to financial reasons. In September 2004, the Frannz Club opened at the same location. Today, the house is spread over four rooms and the beer garden: the taproom with high arched windows and wooden floors, the club with a long bar, Art Deco chandeliers and a stage, the lounge with vintage armchairs as a second floor, and the salon with a view of the inner courtyard.

Concerts and Parties on Three Floors at Frannz Club

The concert program ranges from indie and rock to blues rock and soul, to darkwave and metal. Recently, Teenage Fanclub, Triggerfinger, Henrik Freischlader, Aesthetic Perfection, Messa and Clan Of Xymox have performed on stage, and Friendly Fires and Ryan Sheridan, among others, have been announced. Advance concert tickets start at around 27 Euros.

On party nights, the venue uses several rooms simultaneously. Rock@Frannz plays on three floors with classic rock, pop and indie, Rebel Yell is dedicated to the eighties with synthpop, new wave and Neue Deutsche Welle, and the Schöne Party extends through the taproom, club, lounge, salon and beer garden. Admission usually costs 10 Euros at the door. If you want to eat beforehand, you can get self-service Berlin cuisine in the taproom. The club is wheelchair accessible, access is via the logistics gate and the elevator to the left of the entrance, and an accessible toilet is available.
