Supamolly is hidden in a backyard on Jessnerstrasse and emerged from Friedrichshain's squatter and subculture scene. Bands don't get their gig dates by email but at the weekly pub meeting. Among Berlin's indie clubs, Supamolly has the smallest concert cellar and the cheapest beer.
Supamolly in Friedrichshain: Indie Club in the Backyard
Supamolly is located on Jessnerstrasse between Frankfurter Allee and Boxhagener Strasse, not directly on the street, but in a backyard. First-time visitors often walk right past it. The venue is run by the Jessica Proll association and is one of the places that emerged from Berlin’s squatter and subculture scene of the nineties.
The self-managed nature of the operation is evident in the booking process: bands don’t apply via a form but come to the weekly meeting at the pub and ask for a date in person. Upstairs is the bar with worn-out sofas, candlelight, and walls covered in graffiti; the atmosphere feels more like a shared flat party than a club. The concerts themselves take place in the cellar. A posted photo ban applies in the venue.
Punk, Post-Punk, and Solidarity Nights at Supamolly
The program consistently remains in the independent sphere. Punk and punk rock form the core, supplemented by folk punk, anarcho post-punk, synth wave, emo, and alternative, as well as occasional drum and bass or experimental evenings. Recent acts on stage included Khateym from Brussels and Lille, the folk-punk project Circus Rhapsody, the emo band FONA, and the synth-wave formation Ostbahnhof.
Solidarity nights are a regular feature on the calendar, where contributions go to the respective project. The venue generally does not advertise admission prices, but the bar is one of the cheapest in the city: a Sternburg beer costs about 1.50 Euros here. On certain days, coffee and cake as well as pizza are also available, all in vegan options. Supamolly provides no information on accessibility or card payments, so bringing cash is the safer choice.
