The Kulturbrauerei in Prenzlauer Berg is a piece of Berlin history with industrial charm in a brick look. Since the "Sommermärchen" (Summer Fairy Tale) of 2006, the spacious inner courtyard has been one of the city's most famous public viewing venues.

A Cult Site with History: The Kulturbrauerei in Prenzlauer Berg

Anyone who steps through the large archways of the Kulturbrauerei at Schönhauser Allee 36 immediately understands why this place holds such an appeal. Originating from a small brewery operation, this still impressive ensemble was built from 1878 onwards according to the plans of architect Franz Heinrich Schwechten. The courtyards and architecture have been listed as historical monuments since 1974. In 1991, the venue was founded, and the cultural revitalization of the area began.

Today, the complex is a true microcosm. Theater, gastronomy, a cinema, exhibitions, concerts, workshops, readings, and parties take place here. It hosts the permanent exhibition “Everyday Life in the GDR,” and admission is free. The Soda Club, Frannz Club, and Kesselhaus are also established names in Berlin’s nightlife. Every Sunday, the Street Food Market “Auf Achse” also rolls into the inner courtyard. The Kulturbrauerei attracts a broad audience. Annually, it draws up to 2.5 million visitors. The direct connection to the subway also makes a visit incredibly easy: the Kulturbrauerei is located in the immediate vicinity of the Eberswalder Straße subway station.

Public Viewing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup: Why a visit is worthwhile.

For the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Kulturbrauerei will once again transform into one of Berlin’s most atmospheric public viewing locations. This is a tradition. During major football tournaments such as European or World Cups, the Kulturbrauerei transforms into a football stadium with a very special atmosphere. Since the “Sommermärchen” of 2006, the inner courtyard has been an integral part of Berlin’s World Cup culture.

What makes the location so strong is the interplay of size, technology, and ambiance. All games are broadcast live in the inner courtyard on a 36-square-meter LED screen. In case of bad weather, the broadcast takes place on large screens in the many indoor locations of the Kulturbrauerei, which include concert halls, clubs, and restaurants. Rain is also not a problem. In combination with the two large inner courtyards, events with up to 3,500 people can take place at the Kulturbrauerei. That’s a lot of space for cheering.

Beer and grilled snacks are served in the sunny inner courtyard of the Kulturbrauerei. Furthermore, a special regulation applies for the 2026 World Cup: the federal government has approved exceptions to noise protection for game broadcasts, as due to the time difference to the host cities Mexico, Canada, and the USA, the games will take place here in the evening. Public viewing at the Kulturbrauerei is allowed to continue deep into the night. It hardly gets any better than this.
