In Tempelhof, where film classics like 'Metropolis' once originated, today thrives a self-managed cultural center with a true neighborhood heart. The ufaFabrik combines cabaret, variety shows, and satire with an unparalleled awareness for ecology and community in Berlin.
Cabaret on Historic Ground
The ufaFabrik is a self-managed cultural and living project in the Berlin district of Tempelhof, established on the former studio grounds of Universum Film AG. The international cultural center and commune were founded in 1979 after a peaceful occupation of the approximately 18,500 square meter site. What began as a squatters’ movement now hosts one of the city’s most diverse cultural programs. Across four stages, including the Theater Hall, the Varieté Salon, the Wolfgang Neuss Salon, and the covered open-air stage, audiences can expect a wide spectrum of theater, concerts, cabaret, variety shows, dance, and literature. The ufaFabrik is therefore much more than just a venue: it is a Berlin institution.
The ufaFabrik: Cabaret Meets Community
The cultural program is a colorful mix of theater, variety shows, dance, music, cabaret, readings, and workshops for all age groups, aiming to promote cultural exchange. Cabaret and satire, in particular, have a firm place here. For decades, cabaret artists like Arnulf Rating have performed here, dissecting current events based on media headlines. Furthermore, the program regularly offers formats like the Crossover Slam, which takes the principle of poetry slams further, with various disciplines competing for the audience’s favor. As an alternative living and working project, the ufaFabrik grounds, with their green roof, in-house organic bakery, and decentralized energy supply, are considered a green oasis in the big city. After the show, the café on the premises invites visitors to linger.
