Why Berlin of all places?

While the Ramones are primarily associated with their hometown New York City, bassist Dee Dee Ramone grew up in Berlin, and the city and Germany as a whole appear in numerous Ramones songs. As a child, his family moved to West Berlin due to his father’s military service. This is also why Berlin’s most peculiar music museum is no coincidence, but a consequence.

A collection born out of an obsession

Founder Flo Hayler is a confessed Ramones fan. He experienced his first concert in 1990, and since then, he has been completely devoted to the punk band. His first ticket was the starting signal for a great passion: he began to hoard posters, T-shirts, and all sorts of memorabilia. The museum opened on September 15, 2005, in Berlin-Kreuzberg and is the world’s first and so far only Ramones Museum.

At the Ramones Museum Berlin, you won’t encounter replicas or loaned items. All exhibited memorabilia are originals from the band’s active years, between 1975 and 1996. The exhibits come from the private collections of the band members and include official merchandise as well as rare, significant artifacts that document the band’s history. Among them are Johnny Ramone’s original stage jeans, Marky Ramone’s sneakers, and a stage glove from Joey Ramone.

Bar, café, and punk relics under one roof

In addition to rare T-shirts, unreleased photos, setlists, vinyl records, concert posters, and tickets, it is primarily the personal items and handwritten notes of the band members that make the permanent exhibition worth seeing. Furthermore, the museum chronologically documents the entire career of the New York punk institution, from early concerts at the legendary CBGB to their last concert on August 6, 1996, in Los Angeles, through unpublished and largely signed photos, exclusive promotional materials, and a press archive with more than a thousand articles.

The museum is located at Oberbaumstraße 5 in Kreuzberg, near the Oberbaumbrücke. Admission is generally free.
