The Volkskammer restaurant, not far from Ostbahnhof, transports its guests directly back to the GDR era. Look forward to culinary classics like Goldbroiler or Würzfleisch in an absolutely authentic ambiance.

How authentic is the time travel in the Volkskammer?

The operators of the Volkskammer have created a real time capsule here. Upon entering, we instantly felt transported back to the 70s or 80s. More than just simple decoration, the furniture and the orange-brown hues recall a grandparent’s living room. This truly evokes Ostalgie. You sit on classic chairs and admire the typical lamps on the ceiling. In addition, fitting music from bygone times often plays in the background. Thus, the atmosphere does not seem artificial at all. Rather, the dining room impresses with its honest coziness. The staff often adapts to the concept with a charming “Berliner Schnauze” (Berlin dialect/bluntness).

Do the dishes taste like back then?

Of course, the absolute legends of GDR cuisine are served at the Volkskammer. We first enjoyed the Würzfleisch with Worcester sauce. Furthermore, the Goldbroiler is a very popular choice among hungry visitors. Soljanka also must not be missing from the menu, as it is one of the most famous soups of the East. In addition, the kitchen offers the famous Jägerschnitzel (hunter’s schnitzel) with Spirelli pasta and tomato sauce. We stylishly ordered a Club Cola with it. Alternatively, Rotkäppchen sparkling wine is also available. The portions are generously sized; consequently, no one goes home hungry. The taste is wonderfully down-to-earth and evokes memories.

Editorial Conclusion

We find the overall package at Volkskammer absolutely coherent. The restaurant is excellently suited for all who love hearty home cooking and want to indulge in memories. This location is also a great destination for tourists who want to experience German history firsthand.
