
They are the intellectual fathers of communism – Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels.
Whether the implementation of their ideas in the real existing socialism of the GDR corresponded to their intentions, however, remains to be seen. Much more, the monument to the two philosophers on the Marx-Engels Forum, not far from the Red City Hall, also served GDR propaganda.
Erected in 1986, it was intended to symbolize the strength of the country shortly before the end of the dictatorship. Because the statues were combined with two reliefs: One shows the oppressed people in early capitalism, the other the liberated masses in socialism.
Today, the monument primarily serves as a popular photo motif for tourists.
