Swapping grey rainy days for tropical underwater worlds at Aquarium Berlin

After three years of modernization, the Aquarium Berlin at the Zoological Garden reopened in August 2026. New features include interactive tables and animals like the inland taipan, while the walk-through crocodile hall and one of the world's largest jellyfish breeding facilities remain. For gloomy autumn days in Berlin, this means tropical warmth and sharks, daily from 9 AM to 6 PM.
Aquarium Berlin: Freshly Modernized for the Autumn Season
Since August 18, 2026, Aquarium Berlin on Budapester Straße has reopened to visitors after three years of modernization. Around 10 million Euros were invested in new technology, an elevator, restored tanks, and nine interactive activity tables on topics such as marine conservation and the deep sea. New residents include the inland taipan, the world’s most venomous snake, and the Burmese star tortoise. For gloomy autumn days in Berlin, the reopening comes at the right time.
The building was opened in 1913 based on a concept by ethologist Oskar Heinroth, almost completely destroyed in 1943, and reopened in 1983. The main attraction has always been the walk-through crocodile hall with a suspension bridge over the water. In the largest tank, with over 110,000 liters, bonnethead sharks circle, and the jellyfish breeding facility is one of the most extensive in the world.
Sharks, Crocodiles, and Jellyfish at Aquarium Berlin
The tour leads from the fish, rays, and jellyfish on the ground floor up to reptiles, amphibians, and insects. The reptile floor also houses Gharials and Tuataras, which are considered living fossils. The crocodile hall is particularly popular, where visitors walk on a bridge over the water while the animals doze below. The building is barrier-free, and wheelchairs are provided free of charge against a deposit.
Tickets cost from 16 Euros online for adults and from 7.50 Euros for children; at the ticket office, it is significantly more expensive. Since day tickets are often sold out, online purchase is recommended, especially on rainy days. Those who wish can combine their visit with the neighboring Zoo Berlin, as a joint ticket is available for both attractions.
