Theater Zitadelle in Spandau: Puppet Show in the Renaissance Fortress
Theater Zitadelle is located Am Juliusturm in Spandau, on the grounds of the Citadel. The venue is funded by the Berlin Cultural Administration. The expansion into a Renaissance fortress was decided in 1559 and completed in 1594; the Julius Tower from the early 13th century is considered Berlin’s oldest secular building. A moat surrounds the four bastions, and around 10,000 bats hibernate in the walls. The theater itself celebrates its thirtieth anniversary in May 2027 and is run as a family business by Daniel Wagner, Anna Wagner-Fregin, Regina Wagner, and Ralf Wagner. Those arriving by car can park at the edge of the fortress grounds and walk the last part over the bridge, past the café in the gatehouse. For children’s performances, 90 seats are available; for evening performances, 60. Adults pay 12.00 Euros, children and concessions 8.00 Euros. The venue also operates Theater im Bergmannkiez as a second performance space.
Three Christmas Plays for Children Aged Four and Up
In December 2026, Theater Zitadelle presents three plays for children aged four and up. It begins with Lotta kann fast alles (Lotta Can Do Almost Anything), the Christmas story after Astrid Lindgren. This is followed by Die Weihnachtsgans Auguste (The Christmas Goose Auguste) after Friedrich Wolf, in which a goose is bought as a Christmas roast but ultimately escapes. Finally, Olaf, der Elch (Olaf, the Moose) after Volkmar Kriegel is on the program. All three plays run both on dedicated dates for kindergarten groups and school classes and on Advent weekends for families. The performances use puppets, and all the puppeteers of the house have completed the Puppetry Arts degree program at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts. The ensemble has received multiple awards, including the Ikarus for Little Red Riding Hood, for Once Upon a Snow White Please, and for Dragon Blood and Flower Plaster, as well as the Golden Penguin in Moers. The repertoire starts with plays for children as young as two years old. Many December dates are already sold out, so early booking is recommended.
