Since moving from City West to Helmholtzkiez, Tossakan on Schliemannstraße in Prenzlauer Berg has been cooking, named after a demon figure from Thai literature. The dishes are designed for sharing, and the chili symbols on the menu are to be taken seriously. Among Thai restaurants in Berlin, it is one of the spiciest addresses.

Tossakan Berlin on Schliemannstraße in Helmholtzkiez

Tossakan is located on Schliemannstraße in Helmholtzkiez, one of the quieter residential streets in Prenzlauer Berg. Tram lines M1, M10, and 12 stop at Danziger Straße within walking distance, and it’s just a few minutes’ walk to Eberswalder Straße U-Bahn station and Prenzlauer Allee S-Bahn station. Outdoor tables are available in front of the building, which are the best choice in warm weather as the street has very little traffic. Parking is available in paid street spots in the neighborhood.

The restaurant moved to its current location in spring 2022, having previously cooked in City West. The name comes from Thai literature: Tossakan is a mythical figure embodying evil, whose malevolence in tradition, however, has a tragic backstory. For a restaurant, this is an unusually cumbersome name, and it suits a cuisine that takes little account of German eating habits.

Spicy Thai Cuisine for Sharing at Tossakan

The dishes are designed to be shared among a group, and some are best eaten with your fingers rather than cutlery. One of the best known is Leng Saap, the middle section of pork ribs in a spicy broth with coriander, chili, and lime. Other dishes include papaya salad, fish cakes, Pad Thai, and a changing special of blue crab in yellow curry. Main courses generally range between ten and twenty euros.

The menu indicates spiciness with chili symbols, and this indication should be taken seriously: anything with more than one chili pepper is indeed very spicy. If you are unsure, you can ask for the spiciness to be reduced when ordering. Payment is by card; common debit and credit cards are accepted. Since the restaurant is small and outdoor seating is limited, it’s worth inquiring beforehand.
