Chon Thong on Kantstraße in Charlottenburg has been a secret tip among Berlin's Thai community for years. Those who dine here experience authentic cuisine from all four regions of Thailand, without compromise. The name, by the way, means "Golden Spoon", and that's a commitment.
What’s behind Chon Thong?
Chon Thong is one of the most famous Thai restaurants in Berlin, although at first glance it appears unassuming. Hidden near Papaya on Kantstraße, it has quietly evolved over the past seven years into a meeting point for insiders. Those who come here quickly realize: this is not a tourist spot. The fact that many Thais themselves eat here is the most convincing sign of quality.
The interior is deliberately understated. The decor is simple, with dark wooden furniture and white walls. The food, however, provides everything one needs. In summer, additional tables are available directly in front of the restaurant, from which one can perfectly observe the hustle and bustle on Kantstraße, shaded by an awning. The overall impression is cozy, uncomplicated, and somehow pleasantly familiar.
What should you order at Chon Thong?
The Thai restaurant’s menu is impressively diverse. Guests experience Thai cuisine from all four regions of Thailand. Particularly recommended are the classics: Tom Yum Goong is among the best soups on the menu, Pad Krapow Moo Krob with crispy pork belly and basil impresses with its texture and depth, and Som Tam Poo Pla Ra is a spicy papaya salad for brave palates. If you want something to drink, don’t miss the Thai Milk Tea, which scores as a refreshing accompaniment with a balanced sweetness.
It should be noted that the restaurant only accepts cash payments. Therefore, it’s best to stop by an ATM beforehand. And those who shy away from spice should take the warnings on the menu seriously. When the staff says something is spicy, they really mean it. The prices remain reasonable and fair. Table reservations are nevertheless advisable, as Chon Thong is popular and often well-attended.
