Brechts Steakhouse on Schiffbauerdamm in Berlin Mitte is not named by chance – it was once Bertolt Brecht's regular haunt. Directly opposite the Berliner Ensemble, it serves world-class dry-aged steaks with views of the Spree and a menu that truly showcases the art of butchery.
Steak in Berlin at the Highest Level: What’s on the Menu at Brechts
Brechts Steakhouse relies on meat from suppliers whom owner Michael Pankow has personally trusted for years. The menu features cuts from various origins: meat from German producers like True Wilderness, the dry-aged beef pioneer, and Vinzenzmurr. Additionally, there’s Spanish Rubia Gallega, considered one of the best cattle breeds in the world by connoisseurs, and meat from grass-fed cattle from Ireland. The heart of the kitchen is the in-house dry ager, where selected bone-in cuts mature until their aroma reaches full intensity. The steaks are then grilled to perfection on a lava stone grill.
The menu includes Prime Cuts, beef fillet, rib eye, roast beef, tomahawk, chateaubriand, and tartare. Side dishes include homemade sauces, fresh salads, and fries. For vegetarians, there’s a cauliflower steak with red bean cream and chimichurri, as well as a vegan burger made from pea protein.
A Piece of Berlin History on the Spree Riverbank
The restaurant at Schiffbauerdamm 6 was once the regular haunt of Bertolt Brecht, the great playwright who was known to be a passionate meat-eater. Today, the steakhouse bears his name and is located in direct proximity to the Berliner Ensemble. Owner Michael Pankow also operates the neighboring Ganymed Brasserie and the Vincent Piano Bar, establishing Schiffbauerdamm as one of the most atmospheric restaurant addresses in Berlin Mitte. Anyone strolling along the Spree riverbank in the evening can hardly miss Brechts.
