Häppies: Berlin’s Favorite Germknödel Haven
Anyone walking past a small, cheerfully decorated shop on Dunckerstraße in Prenzlauer Berg has a good chance of spontaneously stopping. The Häppies snack bar, owned by Uli Marschner, originated from a simple idea, a passion for creative cooking, and a successful crowdfunding campaign. The result is a place that radiates good vibes from the outside. Chairs, tables, and walls are adorned with the Häppies logo, and the offerings themselves are anything but ordinary.
Because here, classic Austrian dumpling culture meets Berlin creativity. Häppies serves six to seven different dumpling variations, almost all of which are creative and innovative adaptations of the traditional German Germknödel. Each dumpling has its own name, usually after friends or family members of the founder. Bärbel, for example, is filled with goat cheese, walnuts, and honey, topped with arugula pesto and dried cranberries. Those who prefer sweet will find their favorite in Netti: it’s packed with plum jam, bathed in warm butter and poppy seed sugar.
Snack to Go with Soul
The shop is deliberately kept small, with about 15 seats, but that’s part of its charm. Häppies sees itself as the maker of probably the tastiest Germknödel in the universe, sweet and savory, full of love. If you don’t get a seat, just take your dumpling with you. The menu changes occasionally, but at least half of the dumplings are always meat-free, and some ingredients are organically grown. Many varieties are also vegan. So, if you’re looking for a quick, filling snack to go in Berlin that offers more than a sandwich, you should definitely pay a visit to Dunckerstraße. Uli also regularly appears at the city’s food markets, such as the Winterdorf at the Arena, where she also offers her Germknödel for take-away.
