Drachenhaus Restaurant & Café: Experiential Gastronomy in a Historical Setting

The Drachenhaus is located at the edge of Sanssouci Palace Park, halfway between the Orangery and the Belvedere. The historic building was constructed in 1770 and offers an exceptional backdrop for fresh, seasonal cuisine. Inspired by the Ta-Ho Pagoda in Canton, the house resembles a miniature Chinese palace, an unexpected sight. Dragon sculptures adorn the roof, giving the building its name and distinctive character. Anyone walking past on the way from Sanssouci Palace to the Orangery is bound to stop. The house also impresses culinarily: fresh national and international cuisine, cakes and tarts from its in-house patisserie, and exquisite wines from one of Potsdam’s largest wine cellars are on offer. Special emphasis is placed on regional products, and a sommelier recommends the perfect wine to accompany each dish.

Table Round with the King: Experiential Gastronomy at the Highest Level

What truly makes the Drachenhaus an experiential gastronomy destination, however, are its evening events. The event calendar regularly offers special evening menus, including the “Prussian Potato Evening” or the “Table Round with Frederick the Great,” where the king’s favorite dishes are re-created according to original recipes from a Berlin archive. Upon request, staff serve in historical baroque costumes to match the Prussian ambiance. Furthermore, the Drachenhaus is also a stage: Annually, the house presents the “Music of Old Masters” event series with classical concerts, cabaret, comedy, theater, and readings. The interior can accommodate up to 90 guests, with an additional 160 on the three sun terraces. Thus, the Drachenhaus is suitable both for a spontaneous coffee stop after a park stroll and for festive evenings that will be long remembered.
