On Kastanienallee in Prenzlauer Berg, behind the distinctive, inverted W-logo, lies an Indian fusion cuisine that consistently focuses on vegetarian and vegan options. Here, naan isn't just a side dish but the star: freshly baked over an open fire and topped like a pizza.
W-Der Imbiss: Indian Street Food, Reimagined
Indian, Mexican, Californian, and Italian influences converge here, landing on your tray as naan pizzas, curries, and quesadillas. This might sound like conceptual chaos, but in practice, it works surprisingly well. The establishment describes itself as a „vegetarian-vegan-salmon fusion cuisine”, which quite accurately sums up the spirit of the place. The naan flatbread is prepared according to a classic recipe in an oven over an open fire and forms the basis of almost all the highlights on the menu. The Jewish Naan comes with crème fraîche, smoked salmon, red onions, capers, and dill, while the Green Goddess Naan is topped with guacamole, rocket, sun-dried tomatoes, and chili. A classic Thali with two curry vegetables, dahl, rice, salad, chutney, and yogurt is also on the menu. To drink, there’s mango lassi or fresh mint tea.
Fair Prices, Relaxed Atmosphere
Portions are large and filling, and prices remain within a snack bar range: soups with naan and stuffed naan are available from 7 Euros, a Thali costs 14 Euros. It should be noted, however, that the establishment usually only accepts cash. The atmosphere is casual and relaxed, with seating available both indoors and outdoors. W-Der Imbiss operates two locations in Berlin: one at Kastanienallee 49 in Prenzlauer Berg and a second at Fuggerstraße 20. For Indian cuisine off the beaten path, this snack bar is one of the most reliable addresses in the district.
