Crete in Zehlendorf: The Greek restaurant Der Kretaner on Riemeisterstraße in Berlin stands for Mediterranean cuisine far beyond taverna clichés. Cretan specialties, a sophisticated ambiance in a Bauhaus villa, and genuine hospitality make this southwest part of the city a culinary destination with a travel-like character.
Cretan Cuisine with Character
Anyone familiar with Greek restaurants in Berlin knows: between gyros and blue-and-white walls, there are few surprises. Der Kretaner breaks this pattern. In addition to Greek classics, rare Cretan delicacies and forgotten old recipes are served fresh daily. The kitchen exclusively uses Cretan olive oil, fresh herbs, and seasonally selected products. Those who delve deeper into the menu will be rewarded. Highlights include the Psaro Piatella, a fish platter, and Arni Giaourti, a lamb shank baked in the oven with sheep’s milk yogurt. The moussaka is also impressive: it is served hot in individual oven-safe dishes and resembles a true meal in Crete. The exquisite wine selection complements the dishes perfectly. The head chef and owner has been cooking high-quality Greek meals with his team since 2003 and also features many Greek wines that can effortlessly compete with European rivals.
Der Kretaner: Ambiance and Experience
The restaurant is housed in an old Bauhaus-style villa, directly opposite the Onkel Toms Hütte subway station. Unlike many other Greek restaurants in Berlin, Der Kretaner has a chicer feel: white tablecloths, wooden beams on the ceiling, dark wooden furniture, stone walls, and wooden floors define the aesthetic. A fireplace creates a particularly cozy atmosphere in the dining room during colder months. In summer, the experience moves outdoors. The extensive grounds around the restaurant also include a terrace with seating, a small guesthouse, and even a playground. This ensures enjoyment for longer evenings. For celebrations, reservable event rooms for up to 150 people are also available. Personal advice on food and wine, as well as traditional music on special occasions, turn the visit into a short trip to the Mediterranean.
