Kuchenkultur: small Kreuzberg bakery with a daily changing display case
At the corner of Großbeerenstraße and Yorckstraße, there is a narrow shop whose display case looks different every day. In addition to classics like poppy seed cheesecake, streusel cake, and apple cake, you’ll find pieces that are otherwise rare: oriental orange cake, avocado cheesecake, a pistachio mousse tart, or carrot-poppy seed cake. Baking is done in small batches, and when it’s gone, it’s gone.
The slices are generously cut and usually cost 5.60 Euros; lemon cake and banana bread are 4.40 Euros. If you can’t get one of the few seats inside, you can sit outside at one of the tables on the sidewalk. Many also take their slice to Viktoriapark, which starts a few minutes away. The location is convenient anyway: the Mehringdamm subway station is a good five-minute walk, and the bus stops right around the corner on Hornstraße.
