Klipper Sailing Ship Restaurant: History with Depth

The Klipper is a two-masted ship built in Groningen, Netherlands, in 1890, originally used in the Dutch Wadden Sea to supply the Frisian islands. After its restoration, it was converted into a restaurant ship in 2001 and has since been permanently moored on the banks of the Spree in Berlin-Treptow, between Plänterwald and Treptower Park. The 31.70 m long and 5.70 m wide ship with 24 m high masts offers space for a total of about 60 guests in the former cargo hold and crew quarters. So, anyone who thinks Berlin’s restaurant ships are primarily event backdrops is greatly mistaken here. The Klipper has true seafaring substance.

Fresh Fish, Deck Breakfast, and Homemade Lemonade

Herring fillets with herbs, Norwegian salmon, eel, butterfish, or rainbow trout from the ship’s own smokehouse: The Klipper restaurant ship has something for many fish tastes. Freshly smoked fish is available year-round. In addition, guests can expect maritime delicacies and diverse menus with steaks and homemade elderflower lemonade. The kitchen also offers a breakfast menu from 10:00 to 16:00, for example, the sundeck breakfast with egg, mozzarella, olives, and Serrano ham; in the afternoon, there is homemade cake.

In good weather, guests can also take a seat on deck, either around the steering wheel or in sun loungers on the foredeck. The restaurant also offers a sea pavilion, which is connected to the main facility via a small jetty. The Klipper Sailing Ship Restaurant is a nostalgic favorite among locals: guests praise that dishes are served particularly decoratively and that the ship’s atmosphere, including atmospheric lighting after dark, is often more important than formal service. It is open daily and year-round from 10:00 to 01:00. The restaurant ship can be reached by S-Bahn, bus, car, or even by private boat via the 24-hour sports boat dock of the “Gelbe Welle” (Yellow Wave).
