In the courtyard of Haus Schwarzenberg, just a few steps from Hackescher Markt in Berlin-Mitte, an old brick-green courtyard transforms every summer into one of the city's most atmospheric open-air cinemas. The Open Air Kino Mitte shows arthouse films and modern classics under the open sky, where street art meets cinematic magic.
Arthouse under the Open Sky: What Open Air Kino Mitte Shows
The Open Air Kino Mitte is one of Berlin’s most charming open-air cinemas. With around 100 seats, it’s manageable and therefore pleasantly intimate. The cinema is located in the back courtyard of Haus Schwarzenberg, right next to the entrance to Central Cinema. Films are watched in comfortable chairs, some at cozy small tables directly in front of the screen. We found this particularly pleasant. No sitting on hard benches, but a truly relaxed evening.
During the open-air season, modern classics and current arthouse films are shown in the courtyard of Haus Schwarzenberg. The program is therefore more for cinephiles than for blockbuster fans. So, if you’re looking for independent dramas, French auteur cinema, or international festival hits, this is the place for you. The cinema also shows blockbusters from past years as well as timeless classics. The popular Berlin classic “Wings of Desire” also regularly finds a place in the program. Children’s cinema and many special screenings with guests and festivals complete the program. Furthermore, it applies: All films have English subtitles or are shown in English. Good to know for international guests. Films begin at dusk, and the neighboring Artbar Eschschloraque provides the audience with cocktails and more.
Location and Surroundings: Hackescher Markt as an Evening Kick-off
Kino Central is located directly on Hackescher Markt. Before or after your visit, the numerous shops, bars, and parks in the area invite you for a relaxed stroll through the city. If you want to eat beforehand, you’re spoiled for choice. Hip restaurants, cozy cafés, and stylish bars line up like pearls around the S-Bahn station and the Hackesche Höfe. Particularly recommended is the Restaurant Hackescher Hof on Rosenthaler Straße, which impresses with Art Deco elements and offers a beautiful view of Hackescher Markt. During the day as a Grand Café, in the evening as a Brasserie. If you prefer Georgian cuisine: Directly under the S-Bahn arches at Hackescher Markt, Supra Berlin invites you on a culinary journey through the Caucasus, with freshly baked Khachapuri and spicy Khinkali.
