Freiluftkino Hasenheide is one of Berlin's most charming open-air cinemas, hidden in Volkspark Hasenheide, right in the neighborhood between Neukölln and Kreuzberg. It offers a daily program for everyone, from children's films in the afternoon to arthouse evening films under the stars.
Cinema under the Open Sky: What Freiluftkino Hasenheide Offers
Visiting the open-air cinema in Berlin is rarely as enjoyable as it is here. The season runs until September, and three films are shown daily: a children’s film in the afternoon, an early evening film on the special daylight screen, and an evening film on the large main stage, which starts after dark. The audience sits on wooden benches, which is why we highly recommend a blanket or a seat cushion.
The program includes highlights of the current cinema season, hidden film gems, and classics, enriched by various special events. The early evening and evening program features selected works that focus on people or themes, in addition to the highlights of the last indoor season. The spectrum ranges from commercial blockbusters to arthouse films and international auteur films in OmU (original version with German subtitles). For families, there is a lovingly curated children’s cinema, right next to one of the city’s most beautiful playgrounds. Film discussions with experts and thematic special programs also take place regularly, which we found particularly interesting.
While you can’t bring your own food and drinks, the bar offers cold beverages, wine, coffee, and tea, as well as a selection of snacks from nachos to popcorn and chocolate at fair prices. Should the weather not cooperate, umbrellas are distributed, and the film evening still takes place.
The Location: Neukölln and Kreuzberg on Your Doorstep
The open-air cinema is located in the middle of Volkspark Hasenheide and is well signposted. The best way to get there is by bike or on foot; it’s just under a kilometer from Hermannplatz or Boddinstraße U-Bahn stations. If you want to do something before the cinema, you have excellent options in the immediate vicinity. The legendary Hamy Café directly at Hasenheide 10 serves huge Vietnamese portions for about 6.90 Euros, outside on narrow wooden benches, which is part of the experience. If you prefer something a bit quieter, Café Blume, also directly on Hasenheide, offers a relaxed spot from which you can observe the park and squirrels climbing. Additionally, a stroll to the nearby Tempelhofer Feld is worthwhile, reachable in a few minutes on foot.
