Kilkenny Irish Pub Berlin: Irish Live Music Under the S-Bahn Viaduct

Since 1992, Kilkenny has been one of the first Irish Pubs in former East Berlin, making it a part of Berlin’s nightlife history. The pub is located directly in the Hackescher Markt S-Bahn station, literally under the S-Bahn viaduct. While this doesn’t make it a hidden gem, it’s not trying to be one. Kilkenny has been awarded “Guinness Irish Pub of the Year” three times, which speaks for itself.

Upon entering, you step into three rooms, each with its own character. The front bar area, designed in a brewery style with an impressive copper kettle, wooden counter, and tables made from old barrels, is the perfect spot for a long evening with Guinness and football on the screens. The middle room, in Victorian style with mirrored walls, stained glass, and brass details, houses the stage, right next to the second bar. Warm light from old lanterns, faded Irish lettering on brick walls, and plenty of rustic wood ensure that it remains cozy despite its size.

Live Music Four Evenings a Week and Open Mic Night

For live music under the railway viaduct, Kilkenny is one of the top addresses in the city. On Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, there is live music every evening at the Kilkenny Irish Pub Berlin. Hardly any other Irish pub in the city can reliably bring bands to the stage like this. Mondays also feature an Open Mic Night, where musicians can perform themselves. The program changes regularly, so it’s worth checking the website before your visit.

In addition to live music, sports are also shown here: Premier League, Champions League, Bundesliga, Rugby, and GAA are broadcast live on multiple screens. Authentic Guinness on tap is available, along with Irish whiskey, Irish stew, and classic pub fare. On St. Patrick’s Day, the place is bursting at the seams, but even on normal weekends, the crowds are noticeable. If you’re planning a quiet evening, it’s better to come during the week.
