Cult Pub Klo: Berlin’s Wackiest Fun Activity for Over 50 Years

The KLO is one of Berlin’s true cult pubs. Since 1971, this experience bar in Charlottenburg has been a household name, known for its uncompromising toilet theme and a cult status that has grown over decades. The concept hasn’t changed to this day, and that’s precisely the point. The Klo was intended to be a mix of a cabinet of curiosities and a ghost train, and so it has remained.

The entrance alone hints at what’s to come. The door is locked, and you have to pay a small fee for it to open. Just like in a public toilet. A jet of water and hot air streaming from the floor greet guests. Directly behind the entrance are several terrariums, home to an iguana, a tarantula, and a boa constrictor. So, anyone who thought they were just going for a beer will quickly be proven wrong.

Beer comes in urinal bottles, red wine as a “blood preserve,” and stronger alcoholic drinks in test tubes. Those who prefer to tap their own can buy a card for 5, 10, or 20 liters of Pilsner and serve themselves at the tap. In addition, bar stools suddenly tip over, tables rise from nowhere, and hammer-wielding puppets swing from the ceiling. The DJ is one-of-a-kind, a prototype of Berlin’s blunt wit, who isn’t afraid to go well below the belt with his remarks. There are also changing special drink offers throughout the evening.

This pub, best imagined as a mix of a ghost train and a cabinet of curiosities, is very popular with tourists, but also with many Berliners who consider Das Klo their regular spot. Dark humor and a willingness to laugh at oneself are very helpful for an evening here. For a snack, there’s the XL-Currywurst, served in a kidney dish.
