In the black-painted industrial halls on Köpenicker Chaussee in Rummelsburg, light artist Christopher Bauder creates a parallel cosmos of light, sound, and movement with Dark Matter. Seven immersive installations plus a dedicated special hall make this place arguably Berlin's most intense light art exhibition.

Former Factory Site in Rummelsburg

In Rummelsburg, near the Spree and below the ICE plant Berlin, three halls on a former factory site were painted inside and out with matte black paint. The result is remarkably consistent: whoever enters Dark Matter literally leaves daylight behind. Since March 2025, the site on Köpenicker Chaussee has also been expanded with the new, 1,000 sqm exhibition and event hall TRANSFORMATOR, which provides space for seasonal special exhibitions.

Dark Matter: Seven Chapters of Light and Sound

Dark Matter is a parallel cosmos of expansive light installations where the boundaries between the real and digital world blur. In the pitch-black rooms of the converted factory, visitors embark on a journey through seven partly interactive works, where light, movement, and sound merge into emotional choreographies. Behind it is the visionary light artist Christopher Bauder and his design studio WHITEvoid.

From Permanent Exhibition to Special Show

Spanning 1,000 square meters of exhibition space, Dark Matter presents a wide spectrum of multimedia installations, ranging from intimate light compositions and interactive, walk-through structures to large-format audiovisual performances. Some works utilize a global 3D sound system, adding another dimension to the experience. So, those who think light art is quiet and contemplative will be proven wrong here.

Currently running in the TRANSFORMATOR is the special exhibition FOREST – WINTERLIGHTS: From November 7, 2025, to March 15, 2026, Christopher Bauder composes a poetic forest landscape there across 1,000 square meters with over 600 trees, mostly hanging from the ceiling. As a special highlight, a 400 sqm ice rink invites visitors to glide through the light. A visit to WINTERLIGHTS is not included in the permanent exhibition admission fee.

Prices and Practical Information

A regular online ticket for the permanent exhibition costs 18 Euros from Wednesday to Friday and 20 Euros on weekends and public holidays. Depending on their own pace, visitors usually spend one to two hours in the exhibition. Those who want to experience both worlds should opt for the combi-ticket.
