Berlin Müggelturm: Autumn Panorama over the Müggelberge

The Berlin Müggelturm stands in the Müggelberge forest in the southeast of Köpenick. Today’s tower was designed by a student collective from the Weißensee School of Art and opened on New Year’s Eve 1961, after its wooden predecessor from 1890 burned down in 1958. After years of vacancy, it was renovated and reopened in May 2018. 126 steps lead to the observation platform at a height of approximately 30 meters.

At the top, it becomes clear why the tower is so popular in autumn: all around, the forests of the Müggelberge are turning color, behind them Lake Müggelsee and the Dahme glitter, and on a clear day, the view extends up to 60 kilometers. Right next door is the Großer Müggelberg, at almost 115 meters, Berlin’s highest natural elevation. On its summit, the base of an GDR television tower, whose construction was stopped in 1955, still stands.

Autumn Hike to the Müggelturm in Köpenick

The most beautiful way is on foot: From the Rübezahl bus stop, served by lines X69 and 169, you take a nature trail and a staircase with over 100 steps up through the forest. Along the way, beech leaves rustle underfoot, and Lake Müggelsee flashes through the trees again and again. Those who have more time can add a loop to the small Teufelssee, which often lies still and dark among the trees in autumn. By car, you can go to a parking lot just before the plateau.

Admission costs 6 Euros, reduced 3 Euros, and contributes to the further renovation of the area. At the bottom of the tower, there is a small restaurant for a coffee after the ascent. The tower is not barrier-free, and sturdy footwear is advisable on the forest paths.
