Alte Pumpe: Sunday Breakfast in an Industrial Monument

The Alte Pumpe was once a pumping station and is now a listed building of Berlin’s industrial heritage. Operations ceased in the seventies and the machines were dismantled, except for one enormous piston pump. This was restored and now stands in the restaurant area, where it reliably sparks questions at the breakfast table.

On Sundays from 10 AM, there’s a breakfast buffet that is particularly popular with families. In good weather, tables are set in the garden, and a public children’s playground is right next door, allowing children to move between their plates and the climbing frame.

What else the Alte Pumpe offers

In addition to the restaurant, the building also houses a youth cultural center. The large rooms can be booked for corporate events and other functions, and once a week, there’s an after-work jazz session with a dinner buffet.

For children, the technology is particularly interesting: the preserved piston pump can be viewed up close, and the path to it leads past further traces of the old pumping station. Lützowplatz is just a few minutes’ walk away.
