Danish roots, Japanese soul: Sticks'n'Sushi on Potsdamer Straße in Tiergarten combines fresh sushi with grilled yakitori skewers into a concept that is unparalleled in Berlin. The restaurant, located in an impressive old building, is one of the city's most renowned sushi addresses.
What makes Sticks’n’Sushi in Tiergarten special?
Since its opening in Berlin in 2017, Area Head Chef Song Lee and his team have stood for high-level Japanese craftsmanship: from the open kitchen, Japanese and Scandinavian yakitori skewers as well as a wide selection of sushi are served. The concept initially sounds unusual. Nevertheless, it convinces all along the line. Sticks’n’Sushi sees itself as a blend of Japanese tradition and Danish design, with dishes inspired by creative interpretations of Japanese and Nordic cuisine.
The Japanese “Welcome!” seems sincerely meant when one enters the restaurant in the former Tagesspiegel publishing house. A high-ceilinged room with a gallery accessible via an imposing spiral staircase behind the large open kitchen welcomes guests. All three Berlin restaurants were designed by Danish architect Terese Erngaard and Miriam Kotte from the architectural firm Diener & Diener from Basel and Berlin.
Sushi, skewers and more: What’s on the menu?
The menu is exceptionally curated. The selection of yakitori skewers and sushi ranges from traditional to innovative. Especially the skewer with scallop and bacon is delicious. The fish quality is also outstanding, for example with salmon or seared yellowfin tuna. If you haven’t tried the Wagyu skewers yet, you should change that quickly. The Wagyu beef literally melts in your mouth. Furthermore, the restaurant also impresses non-meat eaters: The focus is clearly on the origin of the products. From salmon to scallops to prawns, everything is sourced environmentally friendly and sustainably.
For the sweet finale, a dozen small desserts are available, from yuzu citrus sorbet to white mousse with berry foam and, typically Scandinavian, liquorice. It’s also worth taking a look at the cocktail menu. Regulars rave about the Yuzu Zoo Cocktail, among others. If you want to be sure, reserve in advance. Especially on Friday evenings, the restaurant is regularly fully booked.
