Historic Inn Moorlake on the Banks of the Havel

Those who come here are not entering an ordinary restaurant. The building was erected in the 1840s as a royal Hohenzollern forest estate, designed by architect Ludwig Persius, a student of Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Initially, Moorlake served the Hohenzollerns as a stop for hunting excursions before the royal house leased it as an inn in 1875. So, anyone taking a seat in the wood-paneled ballroom with stucco decorations, paintings, and a tiled stove is literally sitting in history. Outside, an expansive terrace awaits with views of the Havel, with the silhouette of the Sacrow Church of the Redeemer in the background. The fact that celebrities like Nicolas Cage are said to have retreated here almost seems self-evident.

Berlin Classics, Author Readings, and a Terrace with Havel View

The menu is dominated by down-to-earth Berlin specialties: beef roulade, Berlin-style calf’s liver, venison roast, and seasonal highlights such as Beelitzer asparagus or crispy roasted goose with red cabbage and dumplings. There are also Old Berlin specialties such as leg of lamb with onion-cumin sauce and Spreewald gherkins. The Wirtshaus Moorlake is thus one of the few Berlin “experience gastronomy” venues that combines authentic regional cuisine with a historic backdrop. Furthermore, author readings with well-known names regularly take place here several times a month. It is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 11 AM. For those planning an excursion, the most beautiful way to reach the inn is on foot along the Havel path from Glienicke Bridge.
