Alanya Bistro in Lichtenberg has been a firm fixture since 1963 for anyone looking for a decent Döner in East Berlin. Veal from the spit, freshly baked flatbread, and a shop that's half Döner joint, half neighborhood meeting spot.

A Döner Classic on Josef-Orlopp-Straße in Lichtenberg

Alanya Bistro is located in Lichtenberg, a district in East Berlin that has significantly fewer Döner shops than, for example, Kreuzberg or Neukölln. It’s not just for this reason that this bistro has secured its firm place in the neighborhood over the decades. According to its own statements, Alanya has been around since 1963, making it one of Berlin’s oldest Döner shops. The shop is located at Josef-Orlopp-Straße 7, in the middle of a commercial district with a long history.

The bistro is not a small snack stand, but offers ample seating inside. There are also refrigerators stocked with a large selection of beverages. The shop has the feel of a neighborhood Späti (late-night convenience store) with a Döner counter. Anyone in the area can easily visit the nearby Tierpark (zoo) afterward or make a detour to the Dong Xuan Center, Berlin’s largest Asian market.

What Makes the Döner at Alanya Bistro So Special

The centerpiece here is the veal. It is freshly sliced from the spit and served in warm flatbread with salad and a sauce of your choice. The bread is crispy and thin, the meat juicy. In addition to the classic Döner, there’s also Dürüm, Döner with fries, and Currywurst with bread. The menu is clear and focused, which is appreciated in a good Döner shop. If you like, you can choose between different sauces that complement the ingredients well without dominating. The veal Döner as a menu costs around 12.60 Euros. For a main course with fries and a drink, that’s fair. The portions are generous. Regular guests come back because quality and friendliness remain constant. First-timers should order the classic and let themselves be surprised.
