In the very south of Berlin, in the tranquil Lichtenrade, Curry Wolf upholds the flag of authentic Berlin Currywurst. The red stand on Bahnhofstraße is a neighborhood institution and a go-to for everyone who knows how Currywurst in Berlin should taste.
Curry Wolf Lichtenrade: A Stall with History
The history of Curry Wolf began in 2004 with a tiny stand on Kurfürstendamm. Mathias Wolf took over management in 2012 and helped build the catering business. In 2014, the business was renamed “Curry Wolf”. In December 2018, Curry Wolf returned to its current location at Bahnhofstraße 15 in Lichtenrade. The operator learned in 5-star gastronomy, gained international experience, and then ran an upscale restaurant with a beer garden in Berlin. This commitment to quality is clearly noticeable at the stand. The stand is located in the southernmost part of Berlin, on Bahnhofstraße at the corner of Rehagener Straße. If you have some time after your visit: The idyllic village green with its oval village common, Berlin’s largest village pond “Giebelpfuhl”, and the 14th-century Lichtenrade village church are just a few minutes’ walk away and worth a short detour.
What can you order at Curry Wolf Lichtenrade?
Directly on Bahnhofstraße, you can get the original Berlin Currywurst, with or without skin, along with delicious fries. The menu also includes bratwurst in a bun, curry meatball, and ketchup and mayonnaise as sides. The spicy Opium sauce is included free of charge. The latter is what made Curry Wolf stand out to us compared to other stalls: The “Opium” sauce is a spicy house sauce, particularly popular with Currywurst with skin. If you like it extra spicy, you can also order the Currywurst with the extra-hot “Opium” sauce. The curry sauce itself is fruity and well-seasoned, which we found particularly delicious. The residents of Lichtenrade have also discovered Currywurst in a jar as a popular party snack, and it can be taken directly from the stand. Vegetarian options are currently not on the menu at Curry Wolf, but the stand does offer the curry meatball as a low-meat alternative for those who don’t want a whole sausage. The stand is open Monday to Sunday from 10 AM to 7 PM, making it easily accessible for a quick lunch stop.
